world war z
[ The view from the Garrison watchtower is, in a word, haunting. The base was surrounded by desert on all sides for miles, but where the familiar call of coyotes and other mightlife would have accented the night, there are only the chilling moans of the undead in the distance. Ever present, ever hungry. The sky isn't faring much better. Where bright stars from hundreds and thousands of light years away once shone, there are only thick plumes of smoke from the pyres burning where all the infected are being reduced to ash.
Keith stares at nothing in particular, mind swimming in a thick miasma of disbelief and anger. Hands balled into tight fists, he suppresses the urge to yell into the desert. Can't do that -- not without potentially attracting more of them to this one decimated compound that was once the finest aeronautics and space research facility that Earth had to offer.
Keith sighs, expression faltering with regret. He should be in bed, of course. Sleeping. Because now more than ever, everyone has a particular role to play and deviations from scheduling can mean the difference between everyone getting ripped apart and devoured or everyone living to see another miserable day. All the same, when he hears someone approaching, he doesn't try to hide. Seeing who it is, however, he wonders if that might have been the better option after all. ]
... oh.
[ What else is there to say? ]
